Timothy J. Sakulich is a senior science and technology executive with extensive experience leading major Air Force research organizations and multibillion-dollar R&D portfolios. As Executive Director of the Air Force Research Laboratory from 2021–2025, he oversaw 6,400 personnel and a $3.5B annual S&T enterprise supporting the Air Force and Space Force, forging major industry, academic, and international partnerships and accelerating transition of high-impact technologies.

 

Previously, he directed AFRL’s Materials & Manufacturing Directorate, reshaping the DoD materials and manufacturing portfolio and advancing AI/ML tools for research. He also led implementation of the 2019 Air Force S&T Strategy, founded AF Tech Connect, and supported the launch of the Air Force’s first Vanguard programs. His earlier roles included leading AFRL’s Information Directorate and serving as Vice Director of the 711th Human Performance Wing.

A retired Air Force Colonel, Sakulich holds degrees from the U.S. Air Force Academy and NC State and has received multiple senior civilian and military awards.
