Parallax Advanced Research joins NSF’s SECURE Analytics to bolster research security, risk identification, and data reporting

Today, the U.S. National Science Foundation announced a five-year, $67 million investment to establish Safeguarding the Entire Community of the U.S. Research Ecosystem (SECURE), allocating $50 million to the University of Washington and $17 million to Texas A&M University, as mandated by the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022. Research security is a concern due to attempts by some foreign entities to unethically and unlawfully access and use U.S. research.

SECURE has two main components. The SECURE Center, led by the University of Washington, will connect members of the U.S. research community from higher education institutions, nonprofits, and businesses on a safe, trustworthy platform. This platform will facilitate the sharing of information and reports on research security risks, provide training on research security, and act as a bridge between the research community and government funding agencies to strengthen cooperation on addressing security concerns. It will serve as a clearinghouse for information, empowering the research community to identify and mitigate foreign interference that threatens the U.S. research enterprise while maintaining principled international collaboration. SECURE Analytics, led by Texas A&M University, will offer enhanced expertise in risk identification and modeling, landscape analyses, and data reporting, while ensuring the privacy of the center’s users.

Parallax Advanced Research plays a pivotal role in the efforts of SECURE Analytics. Parallax will leverage its expertise in research intelligence to develop and deploy advanced analytical platforms designed to safeguard research activities from threats such as espionage, intellectual property theft, and unwarranted knowledge transfers. By utilizing cutting-edge technologies, such as natural language processing, machine learning, and semantic analysis, Parallax will transform vast amounts of raw scientific and technological data into actionable insights.

LJ Eads, director of Research Intelligence at Parallax, will lead these efforts, ensuring that the analytical tools and platforms not only meet but also exceed the needs of the research community. His innovative approach and deep expertise in data analysis, risk modeling, and AI-driven analytics will be instrumental in achieving SECURE Analytics' objectives. By contributing to SECURE Analytics, Parallax will play a critical role in bolstering the integrity and security of the U.S. research enterprise, safeguarding it against evolving threats while promoting principled international collaboration.

Data Abyss, developed by Eads, stands as a strategic partner in the realm of research security and knowledge protection, empowering analysts to uncover invaluable intelligence and providing a unique vantage point in the landscape of intelligence analysis. Eads has also developed several public resources for the research community, including Data Abyss S&T Trackers

“We are excited to contribute our cutting-edge technologies and methodologies to the SECURE Analytics initiative, ensuring the integrity and security of U.S. research against evolving threats.” said Eads. “Our goal is to provide unparalleled insights and support to protect the integrity of scientific advancements.”
