Urban Farming Advanced Research and Management (UFARM)
The Urban Farming Advanced Research and Management (UFARM) Project is a pioneering initiative led by the Ohio Aerospace Institute in partnership with Parallax Advanced Research and LANDWERX. Backed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Congressionally Identified Projects Program, UFARM is redefining how urban agriculture is imagined and implemented in Cleveland, OH. Through the integration of advanced technologies—such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), precision sensors, robotics, and smart irrigation—UFARM aims to transform vacant city lots and rooftops into high-yield vertical farms that increase food access and community resilience. Focused on sustainability, workforce development, and STEM engagement, UFARM combines research, technology testing, and community education to build a scalable model for the future of food production in urban environments. The initiative supports both local food security and economic revitalization while positioning Cleveland as a national leader in smart agriculture innovation.

Partnerships
Parallax Advanced Research fosters innovation and drives the nation’s strategic and technology based partnerships by leveraging the Triple Helix Model of Innovation. This model, adapted from Etzkowitz & Leydesdorff (2000), builds partnerships across academia, industry, and government to address critical national security and technical challenges. These collaborations unite diverse capabilities and research efforts to develop bold, innovative solutions for the nation’s science and technology enterprise.
Parallax acts as a catalyst, connecting academic and industry partners with federal government needs. By facilitating knowledge exchange, building innovation hubs, and hosting events like opportunity days and colliders, Parallax creates environments where stakeholders communicate their needs, capabilities, and opportunities for collaboration. This approach enhances innovation ecosystems and strengthens the connections between academic research, business capabilities, and government objectives.
- Facilitating academic-industry-government collaboration through innovation hubs and talent exchange programs.
- Managing networks like OFRN and the OnRamp Hub: Ohio to support university-industry research partnerships aligned with federal needs.
- Promoting exploration of different perspectives and bold solutions via intelligent teaming opportunities.
- Supporting commercialization of research through consulting, training, and funding facilitation.
For example, through initiatives like the Ohio Federal Research Network (OFRN) and the Defense Innovation Unit OnRamp Hub: Ohio, Parallax has made significant strides in stimulating Ohio’s innovation economy.
- Since its inception, OFRN has funded cutting-edge research projects, spurred job creation, supported startups, and secured substantial follow-on funding. These partnerships are transforming ideas into impactful technologies that meet federal demands while fostering economic growth.
- Since its inception, the OnRamp Hub Ohio has served as a bridge between federal agencies, industry, and academic institutions, accelerating the transition of innovative technologies into practical applications. By fostering collaborative partnerships and aligning regional capabilities with federal needs, the Hub has advanced economic growth, supported workforce development, and enhanced technological readiness. Through its targeted initiatives, OnRamp Hub Ohio has enabled businesses to navigate federal contracting opportunities, facilitated access to critical resources, and driven the successful commercialization of cutting-edge innovations. These efforts are transforming Ohio into a national leader in defense strategic and technology based partnership development.
Parallax Advanced Research’s partnerships exemplify how collaborative efforts can fuel innovation, strengthen the economy, and advance the nation's technological leadership.
