International engagement is an important effort for expanding market opportunities and enhancing competitive advantage in the aviation, space, and defense sectors. The Ohio Aerospace Institute’s Global Industrial Engagement capability, wholly affiliated with Parallax Advanced Research and spearheaded by Managing Director Kim Holizna, helps Ohio-based aerospace companies explore and take advantage of international business opportunities while supporting their growth in workforce, national security, and innovation. It also assists international aerospace companies with the same objectives seeking to open business in Ohio.

Overview of Global Industrial Engagement

This capability assists companies in understanding and accessing global supply chains, building business connections, and complying with standards and regulations within the global aerospace industry. Holizna’s role and expertise are pivotal in guiding businesses through these complexities, ensuring they are well-equipped to compete on a global stage.

“By providing insights into global supply chains, standards, compliance, and sustainability, we enable Ohio and international aerospace companies to thrive in Ohio and beyond,” said Holizna.

The initiative is rooted in the recognition that aerospace is a global industry. Dr. John Sankovic, President of the Ohio Aerospace Institute, envisioned a program that connects Ohio’s rich component manufacturing sector with the expansive global aerospace market. Holizna’s expertise in international business was a significant factor in her recruitment and reflects a strategic move to bridge the gap between Ohio’s manufacturing capabilities and global market demands.

“Aerospace growth is predominantly occurring outside the U.S., and much of the supply chain is international,” said Holizna. “It’s important for U.S. companies to be proactive in creating opportunities abroad. Ohio’s leadership in this sector, also exemplified by our participation in major trade shows like Farnborough, Paris, and Avalon, positions us as a key player in the global aerospace sector.”

Furthermore, the collaboration between Parallax and OAI amplifies the initiative’s effectiveness by combining research capabilities with industry expertise. This partnership enhances the ability to identify and pursue global opportunities and create a robust support system for Ohio companies expanding into the global market.

“Parallax’s research capabilities, specifically AI and data analytics, complement our ground efforts by providing insights and data and expanding our reach,” said Holizna. “Together, we’re working to position Ohio at the forefront of the aerospace sector and attract global organizations to our state and build Ohio’s aerospace industry reputation internationally.”

Services and Support for Businesses Entering the Global Market

OAI’s Global Industrial Engagement services include:

  • Training companies on international standards, compliance, and certifications.
  • Evaluating companies’ readiness to enter global markets and connecting them to relevant services.
  • Facilitating connections with international and local partners and navigating global supply chains.
  • Utilizing network to evaluate and assess potential leads for investment opportunities in Ohio

“Our goal is to create more opportunities for Ohio businesses and attract global companies to Ohio,” said Holizna.

Holizna also develops bilateral relationships with international organizations and trade partners with complementary tools and resources to grow aerospace markets and opportunities for Ohio and international businesses alike. She and her team have led trade missions to major aerospace trade shows where they have established strategic partnerships in key markets like the UK, Canada, France, and Australia, with a planned mission to Brazil in Spring of 2025. They also stay ahead of market trends by regularly meeting with international counterparts to obtain insights on what’s happening in local markets where Ohio businesses have interest in establishing a presence. This information is then shared with Ohio companies so they can make business decisions that position them well for success.

Global Engagement Success

Holizna’s efforts have resulted in notable successes, including building a bi-national partnership between the Great Lakes Aviation, Space, and Technology Alliance (GLASTA), AeroMontreal, and the Council of the Great Lakes Region in 2022. This partnership is developing a first-of-its-kind sustainable aerospace and defense corridor between the Great Lakes Region and Canada.

“Companies entering the US market often face challenges related to U.S. regulations and local industry dynamics,” said Holizna. “That’s why preparation and understanding your market and complying with U.S. regulations are essential for success. We help companies navigate these complexities and establish a strong presence in Ohio.”

Looking Ahead

As the global aerospace industry continues to expand, OAI’s Global Industrial Engagement team remains committed to creating opportunities for Ohio companies and attracting international players to Ohio.

“Our mission is to keep Ohio’s aerospace sector at the forefront of global innovation,” said Holizna. “By cultivating strong international partnerships and empowering local businesses, we’re creating a vibrant and forward-thinking aerospace community that we are truly proud of.”
